Plaka and the lockers, the easy way round

Plaka spreads over the north and east slopes of the Acropolis, between Syntagma and Monastiraki. Our neighbourhood, Makrygianni, is directly south of it, on the other side of the Acropolis Museum. From the lockers, walk up Makrygianni Street to the museum, cross Dionysiou Areopagitou, and you are in the lower lanes of Plaka within ten minutes. Adrianou, the main street, is another two or three minutes.

If you are staying in Plaka and checking out in the morning, the walk down to us takes the same ten minutes and it is downhill all the way. Drop your bags, then spend the day between the Acropolis, the museum and the tavernas, and pick them up before 22:00 on your way to the metro at Akropoli, two minutes from our door.

Plaka's lanes are not made for suitcases and most cafés will not keep one for you. Booking a locker before you arrive means you know exactly where your bags are going.

What to do in Plaka with your hands free

Anafiotika, the tiny whitewashed village clinging to the rock under the Acropolis, is the reason to come: steep, silent, and impossible with luggage. Below it, Adrianou Street for the shops and the tavernas, the Roman Agora and Hadrian's Library at the Monastiraki end, and the small museums along Kydathinaion Street.

Plaka is at its calmest before 11:00 and after 20:00. In between, the terraces around Lysikratous Square, a few minutes from Hadrian's Arch, are the quieter spot for lunch. For a drink, Brettos on Kydathinaion, the old distillery with the wall of coloured bottles, is the classic stop (4.6 on Google, close to 5 000 reviews).
