First, the bags

The whole neighbourhood is built on a slope between Syngrou Avenue and the Acropolis, with marble pavements, café tables on the street and a museum that does not take suitcases. Nothing below is enjoyable with luggage. Book a locker, drop the bags from 9:00, and start here.

What to see, by walking time from the lockers

Three minutes away, the Acropolis Museum. Start with the glass floor over the excavated ancient neighbourhood, finish on the top floor with the Parthenon frieze laid out at the same size and orientation as the real thing, visible through the windows.

Four minutes, Dionysiou Areopagitou. The pedestrian promenade under the Acropolis, from Hadrian's Arch to Thissio. Walk it in the late afternoon.

Six minutes, the Temple of Olympian Zeus and Hadrian's Arch. Fifteen columns of what was the largest temple in Greece, at the top of Syngrou Avenue.

Eight minutes, the Acropolis. Up the promenade to the south slope entrance by the Theatre of Dionysus. Go early or late; midday in summer is neither pleasant nor photogenic.

Ten minutes, Plaka and Anafiotika. Over the top of the museum and down into the lanes. Anafiotika, the whitewashed village on the rock, is the part not to miss.

Ten minutes, Filopappou Hill. Up through Koukaki for the classic view of the Parthenon, best an hour before sunset. Free, and usually empty.

Questions travellers ask

How long do I need for the Acropolis Museum and the Acropolis?

Count two hours for the museum and two for the Acropolis, plus the walks. With a locker for the day you can do both and still have lunch in between.

Is Makrygianni a good area to eat in?

Yes, and it is less touristy than Plaka despite being next to the museum. The pedestrian Makrygianni Street and the corners of Porinou and Lempesi are where the neighbourhood eats.
